St. Louis Park Senior High School African American Support Services Boys to Men Circle is a group for African American boys in grades 9-12 at St. Louis Park Senior High. It is a weekly support and advocacy group where the students meet to talk about school successes, barriers, needs, etc. It is run in a restorative justice circle practice that teaches respectful communication and active listening. The goals of the group are to increase academic performance, social skills and support students with personal issues. The group is often given opportunities to meet with successful African American men and women as a means of seeing role models that have succeeded. Some of the prominent people the group has met with are Supreme Court Justice Alan Page, Public Health Nurse Beverly Pope, and 1968 Gold Medalist Norm Tate. The group also presents the restorative Justice Circle model at various schools and conferences. The group meets weekly with students who are registered for Advanced Placement, IB, or Honors for the first time. The pairs meet two times per month working on the identified goal areas of school improvement, interpersonal relationships and goal setting. It is a weekly support group that meets to talk about successes, barriers, academics, social issues, etc. The group has a built-in mentoring program with a big sister little sister program. Older students are paired with younger or new students as a means of providing peer support. The students take several field trips and work on topics of interest to African American females.
