Title One Program

St. Louis Park Public Schools Title I Program

The purpose of St. Louis Park Public Schools Title I program is to provide opportunities to support children in the basic skills areas. The support instruction is to ensure the success of each learner as set forth in the January 2001 Title I Act, "No Child Left Behind."

Program Features

Reading and mathematics are supplemented in various grade levels. Students are selected for an extra boost to enhance the regular academic program. Instruction models may be inclusion, pullout, or a rotation model. Students receive their initial instruction from the classroom teacher, and lessons are reinforced during the school day by a Title I teacher or instructional paraprofessional. They may meet with the student individually or with a small group, depending upon the skill areas needing reinforcement. Students are identified through teacher or parent request, criterion or standardized assessment.

Title I and ESL Extended Day Kindergarten is offered to students at Aquila.The program offers an additional 1 ½ hours focused on academic and social goals agreed upon by parents and teachers.

JumpStart to Reading and Imagination Stations are supplemental programs for first graders to enhance alphabet recognition, sounds, and reading readiness and phonics instruction in a 1:1 or 1:2 teacher:student ratio.

The Title I program supports students at Aquila and Cedar Manor in Language Arts and Mathematics. Both inclusion and pull out services are offered throughout the school year.

Communications with the student's family, classroom teacher and Title I staff are on-going. Family involvement has a great impact on student learning. Parent/School Compacts are developed with each family to share goals and responsibilities.

Who is eligible for Title I service?

Any student attending a Title I school who meets the program criteria is eligible to receive help in mathematics and/or reading. Students in kindergarten through grade six are eligible.

Services at Kid's Connection in the Reach for the Stars extended- day learning program is possible, in part, through funding available with the McKinney-Vento grant linked to Title I.

Title I schools for the 2007-08 school year include Aquila Primary Center, Cedar Manor Intermediate, two Non Public schools, Kid's Connection.

What can I as a parent do to help my child?

• By showing interest in their learning
• By discussing school events and homework studies
• By monitoring progress
• By supporting and participating in school activities
• By conferring with the teacher and asking what skills can be reinforced at home
• By providing study tools and a quiet place for homework
• By observing routines for homework, bedtime and other deadlines
• By building confidence and self-esteem through praise and encouragement
• By attending family events and visits
• By reading school communications and providing requested feedback
