Chipmunks
Description - What does this animal look like?

Chipmunks are mammals. They can be red, brown or gray. They have dark and light stripes along the back. Their stomachs are light-colored. Chipmunks eyes are surrounded by white fur.

Chipmunks are about 4 to 7 inches long. They have a long, bushy tail. They weigh from 1 to 5 ounces.

Chipmunks are larger than mice and smaller than squirrels.

 

Habits and Behaviors

Chipmunks hibernate during the cold winter months.

Chipmunks can climb trees. They also can dig holes.

 

Habitat and Home - Where this animal lives

Chipmunks can be found in forests, bushes and even houses.

Some chipmunks make nests in logs or in bushes. These are their homes. They sleep in their nests.

They also like to dig and make homes in holes called burrows, which can be over 11 feet long. These burrows have more than one entrance and have extra rooms in which chipmunks store their winter food.

Diet - Food this animal eats

Chipmunks eat nuts, fruit, berries, seeds, leaves and stems.

They sometimes eat insects.

 

Predators of this animal

Weasels, hawks, foxes, bobcats, and house cats eat chipmunks.
