Ants

Description:

Ants are insects, they have 6 legs.

Their body has 3 parts: a head, thorax and abdomen.

They have big jaws and long feelers.

Ants have tough skin that is just like armor.

Ants come in many colors. They can be brown, yellow, red, or black. Black ants are the most common.

The ants life cycle has 4 stages:

Stage 1: Egg
Stage 2: Larva
Stage 3: Pupa
Stage 4: Adult

Defense:

Ants can smell danger. An ant's antennae also helps warn of danger. They pick up vibrations from the ground.

Ants can bite and sting other insects to capture them or to protect themselves.

Worker ants guard the nest. So when ants from other nests come to steal the food, the worker ants fight them.

Diet:

Ants eat other insects, seeds, and they suck the juices from fruit, vegetables or flowers.

Ants use their antennas to help them find food. If one ant finds food, others follow, and help carry food back to the ant city.

Habitat:

Ants live in rainy areas, dry deserts, on high mountains, and in forests. Ants live in colonies with other ants.

Cool facts:

  • Ants cooperate with one another for the good of the whole ant colony.
  • Ants have lived on earth for millions of years.
  • There are over 35,000 kinds of ants in the world.
