Butterflies

Description:

Butterflies are insects, they have 6 legs.

Their body has 3 parts: a head, thorax and abdomen.

They have two pair of colorful, wide wings.

Butterflies can be from half an inch wide, to 11 inches wide (with its wings spread).


The life cycle of the butterfly has 4 stages:

Stage 1: Egg
Stage 2: Caterpillar
Stage 3: Pupa
Stage 4: Adult

 

Defense:

A butterfly's bright colors warn birds and other animals to stay away. Some are protected by the bad smells they give off. Their eyes help them escape from enemies.

 

Diet:

Butterflies eat a sugary liquid called nectar. Nectar is found in flowers. The butterfly has a straw-like tube on its head that it pokes into a flower to sip the nectar.

 

Habitat:

Butterflies live in deserts, wetlands, forests, meadows, and marshes. Almost all types of habitats throughout the world except Antarctica because it is always frozen.

 

Cool facts:

  • Butterfly wings feel like velvet because they are covered with tiny, powdery scales.
  • Butterflies don't have a nose. They smell things with their antennae.
  • There are more than 15,000 different kinds of butterflies.
  • Butterflies can lay more than 1000 eggs at one time.
  • Ten species are endangered
