Description:

Butterflies are insects.

They have 6 legs.

Butterflies have 3 body parts.

They have two pairs of colorful wings.

 

The life cycle of the butterfly has 4 stages:

Stage 1: Egg
Stage 2: Caterpillar
Stage 3: Pupa
Stage 4: Adult

 

Defense:

The butterfly's bright colors warn birds and other animals to stay away.

Some give off bad smells.

Their eyes also help them escape from enemies.

 

Diet:

Butterflies eat nectar.

Nectar is found in flowers.

 

Habitat:

Butterflies live in forests, meadows, deserts and wetlands.

 

Cool facts:

  • Butterfly wings feel like velvet.
  • Butterflies can lay more than 1000 eggs at one time.
  • Butterflies don't have a nose. They smell things with their antennae.
