Dragonflies


Description:

Dragonflies are insects, they have 6 legs.

Their body has 3 parts: a head, thorax and abdomen.

They have 4 large transparent wings.

Dragonflies have two huge compound eyes and three simple eyes that are sensitive to light.

Dragonflies are two or three inches long.

Their bodies have a variety of colors.


The dragonfly's life cycle has 3 stages:

Stage 1: Eggs
Stage 2: Nymph
Stage 3: Adult


Defense:

Dragonflies use their huge compound eyes to see in all directions to see enemies. When they sense or see there is danger, they fly away.


Diet:

Dragonflies eat other flying insects such as mosquitoes, flies, bees and gnats. They usually hunt during the day.


Habitat:

Dragonflies live near ponds, streams, or lakes.


Cool facts:

  • They are called dragonflies because they look like small flying dragons.
  • Dragonflies make a loud buzzing sound when they fly.
  • Dragonflies legs are too weak for walking.
  • Dragonflies are among the earliest flying insects. They have been around for over 300 million years.
