Mantises


Description:

Mantises are insects, they have 6 legs.

Their body has 3 parts: a head, thorax and abdomen.

Mantises have wings.

The mantis has a long, graceful body and a small, heart-shaped head.

Mantises can be less than 1/2 inch long to over 6 inches long.

They are green.


The mantis' life cycle has 3 stages:

Stage 1: Eggs
Stage 2: Nymph
Stage 3: Adult


Defense:

The dark green coloring of a mantis helps them to hide from birds and other insects who might eat them. It's long body helps them to be better hunters.


Diet:

Mantises eat the bodies of insects that they hunt and kill. Mantises are predators.


Habitat:

The mantis can be found in temperate (warm and cool areas) or tropical (very hot) climates all across the world.


Cool facts:

  • When the mantis is at rest, it looks like a person with arms raised in prayer.
  • Mantises look so peaceful, but can attack with deadly force.
  • The mantises can turn it's head and upper body. It is one of the few insects that can move its head from side to side and up and down.
  • In daylight, a mantis's eyes are usually light green or tan, but when night falls, they turn dark brown.
  • One large egg case containing mantis eggs can have as many as 400 eggs in them!
  • They are close relatives of grasshoppers and crickets.
  • There are more than 1,500 kinds of mantises.
