Do I have to smoke or chew tobacco to get hurt?
If people around you smoke, and you breath it, you can also get sick. This is called "second-hand smoke."

In other words, someone else caused the smoke in the air, but you breathe it and can get sick. Very sick.

Why don't people quit if it is so bad?

Tobacco contains a drug called nicotine. Nicotine makes it hard for people to stop smoking and chewing. We call this an addiction.
