The U.S. Capitol is a building.

 


 

Where is it located?

It is located in Washington D.C. It sits on a hill called Capitol Hill.

 


 

What does it symbolize or represent?

The capitol symbolizes the United States government and the American people.

 


 

Facts about this symbol:

1.   The capitol is the home of the United State's Congress.

2.   Construction began on September 18, 1793. President George Washington laid the first stone in place. It took 18 years to finish. Building was not done until 1811.

3.   The Capitol was first used by Congress in 1800. They used a part of the building that was finished.

4.   The capitol has 3 parts. One part is a round entry with a dome above it. It also two parts are called wings.

5.   The Capitol was made much bigger in the 1850's. Slaves were used to work on it.

Did you know?

Shortly after the Capitol was completed, parts of it were burned by the British during the War of 1812.

Before the Capitol was built, the Congress used eight different buildings, in eight different cities to meet in.
