What is this symbol?

The Liberty Bell is a large bell used to alert people to important events.

 


 

Where is it located?

It is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

 


 

What does it symbolize or represent?

The Liberty Bell symbolizes the United States' freedom from the British.

 


 

Facts about this symbol:

1.   The state of Pennsylvania ordered the bell in 1751. It was made in London and shipped to Philadelphia in 1752.

2.   The bell cracked the first time it was rung. It had to be fixed many times, but never worked well.

3.   The bell was rung for important events. For example, it was rung on July 8, 1776 for the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. This was during the Revoluntionary War.

4.   The bell has cracked many times. But now when it is rung, it is rung gently to avoid making the cracks worse.

Did you know?

The Liberty Bell had to hidden in a church for part of the Revolutionary War to keep the British from stealing it.

The bell is made mostly of copper.

The bell has been melted down many times and recast to try and make it sound better.
