The Pledge of Allegiance is an oath said out loud.

 


 

Where is it located?

The Pledge of Allegiance is always said in front of the U.S. flag.

 


 

What does it symbolize or represent?

Saying the Pledge of Allegiance represents a person's promise to honor the United States.

 


 

Facts about this symbol:

1.   The Pledge of Allegiance was written for a children's magazine.

2.   The magazine's owners wanted to sell more flags and magazines to schools. They thought reading a pledge in front of the flag would help sell more flags.

3.  They also thought reading a pledge was a good way to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus arriving to America in 1492.

4.   The pledge was first used in public schools in 1892 on Columbus Day.

5.   The U.S. Congress recognized the Pledge as the national pledge in 1945.

Did you know?

The author of the pledge also considered using the words equality and fraternity. But he thought they were too controversial since many people still opposed equal rights for women and African-Americans.
