What is this symbol?

Mount Rushmore is a mountain carved in the shape of four presidents.

 


 

Where is it located?

It is located in South Dakota.

 


 

What does it symbolize or represent?

Mount Rushmore symbolizes the first 150 years of United States history, to many Americans.

It is also symbol of what the white people did to this country when they took the land from the Indians.

 


 

Facts about this symbol:

1.   In the early 1900's, South Dakota wanted more tourists to visit their state.

2.   They hired a sculptor named Gutzon Borglum. He would carve a mountain to attract people to see it.

3.   He and 400 workers carved the images of 4 presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

4.   It took 14 years to sculpt the presidents. They started in 1927 and finsished in 1941. The work was very dangerous and hard.

5.   Mount Rushmore was a success in attracting tourists. Many people come to see it every year.

Did you know?

The faces of the presidents are 60 feet tall.

The mountain is made of granite.

Civil rights leader Susan B. Anthony's image was almost added.
