Facts about this symbol:

1.   George Washington was a very important American. He was called the "Father of the Country."

2.   Washington was an army commander and President of the Constitutional Convention. He was also the first President of the United States.

3.   The Washington Monument was begun in 1848. The first part, called the cornerstone, was laid on the Fourth of July.

4.   It took a long time to build. The builders kept running out of money. One time when they restarted, they had to use different colored stone.

5.   The Washington Monument was finished in 1884. At that time, it was the tallest building in the world. It is still the tallest building in Washington D.C.
