Abe Lincoln was born in a log cabin. In 1818, when Abe was nine years old, his mother died. His father remarried Sarah Johnston. Soon Abe studied reading, writing, and math with her help. Abe went to a "blab school." A blab school is where everybody body in the school reads out loud. He was known for always borrowing books from people. |

Abe became a lawyer in Springfield, Illinois. He then married Mary Todd. They had four sons. Abe hated slavery and wanted to stop it. To do this he became interested in politics. He was elected to congress. In 1860 Lincoln won the presidency. He was a "Northerner." In 1860 several southern states left the United States to start their own country so they could keep their slaves. This was the start of the Civil War. As president, Abe wrote the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves. He also wrote the Gettysburg address. In 1865 he was shot by John Wilks Booth who was a southerner. In Washington D.C. there is a statue called the Lincoln Memorial. Abe Lincoln also appears on the back of the penny. |
