Young Life and Family

When Jane was young people called her Jenny. When she was three, her mother died. Jane then became very close to her father. She would mimic everything he did. As a young girl, she would ask her father why people lived in really small homes so close together. It showed she was already concerned about other people. |

Jane did not like that poor people and immigrants did not have enough food to eat and did not have a place to live. To help the poor, Jane and a friend opened up the Hull House. It was a place where people could get food and housing. At Hull House, people could also learn skills such as: nursing, sewing, art, crafts, and music. Because Hull House helped people, other "settlement" houses were opened up in many other cities. Jane Addams also worked hard to get women the right to vote. |
