Jackson's father died a few days before was born. At age nine he learned how to read. When he was 13 he was a messenger for the troops of the revolutionary war.

He became an attorney and moved to Tennessee. He became a general during the war of 1812. His soldiers thought he was as tough as an old hickory tree. "Old Hickory" became his nickname. He was president from 1829 to 1837. He served two terms. He died at age 78. |
