Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy.

He died in 1506 in Spain.

Accomplishments

Christopher Columbus was famous because he was the first European to discover the Americas in 1492.

Young Life and Family
 

Christopher grew up in Genoa, Italy. Genoa was a big sea port. His father was poor and Christopher worked for him. Christopher learned a lot from the sailors in the area.

As soon as he could sail a boat he went out to sea to fish. He made longer and longer journeys out to sea. While on the ships he studied geography and maps.

In 1476 he moved to Portugal.

Adult Life
 

In 1492 he sailed westward into the Atlantic Ocean with three ships, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Columbus sailed to the West Indies, which is part of America. This was a new world to the Europeans. Many Native Americans lived there, and had for many years.

Columbus made a few more trips to the Americas before he died.
