Leonardo was the son of a legal specialist, and a peasant woman named Caterina. His father's family raised him. He took his name from the city he grew in, Vinci, Italy. Vinci is near Florence which is a commercial and cultural center in Italy.
During the late 1460's, Leonardo became an apprentice, or student, to a leading painter and sculptor in Florence. He was as an assistant for several years after completing his studies. |

Leonardo was a famous artist and painted many things. His most famous painting is the "Mona Lisa." He studied many different things such as anatomy, astronomy, botany, geology, geometry, and optics. He also designed machines and drew plans for hundreds of inventions. |
