Ulysses S. Grant was born April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio.

He died on July 23, 1885 in New York .

Ulysses S. Grant was a president of the United States.

Young Life and Family
   

Grant's real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant.

Grant loved horses. When he learned how to walk, he also learned how to ride a horse.

He was a hard working kid.

Adult Life
 

Grant served in the army during the Mexican-American War. He won a medal for being brave.

Grant disliked slavery. In 1861 the Civil War broke out between the north and the south. He was a general in the Civil War. He fought against Robert E. Lee, a general from the south.

The war was to decide if there should be slavery in the United States. The north won.

Grant was elected president of the United States in 1868. He served two terms.
