Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri.

He died May 22, 1967 in New York City, New York.

Accomplishments
 

He was famous because he was a poet.

Young Life and Family
 

Langston lived in Lawrence, Kansas with his grandmother. For a while he went to segregated schools.

When his mother died, so he went to friends of his family.

His grandfather was also a writer.

Adult Life
 

His first poem was called "The Negro Speaks of Rivers." He also wrote one called "The Weary Blues." He was inspired by listening to jazz and blues music.

Some of his other works were called "One Way Ticket", "Not Without Laughter", "The Big Sea", and "I Wonder As I Wander."

He died of cancer in 1967
