Jefferson's father provided Thomas with good schooling. He studied Latin and Greek as a child. His father owned a lot of land in Virginia. He was also a famous explorer. |

Jefferson started studying law when he was 24. When he was 28 he was elected to the Virginia State Government. In 1779 he was elected governor of Virginia. On Feb. 17, 1801 he became president of the United States. He bought the Louisiana Territory from France. The Louisiana Territory was all the land west of the Mississippi in 1801. During his 2nd term as president he chose Lewis and Clark to explore the Northwest region of the Louisiana Territory which was now the United States. In his later life Jefferson was an architect, farmer, and philosopher. |
