Martin Luther King, Jr. was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia.

He died on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Accomplishments
 

Martin Luther King Jr. was famous because he was a civil rights leader.

Young Life and Family
Martin's father and grandfather were both civil rights leaders. Both were famous.

Martin was not very religious until he became a young adult.

Martin went to Morehouse College, from 1944 to 1948. He then attended Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania to become a minister.

At Boston University, King began doctoral studies in theology in 1951.

Adult Life

As an adult, King was a minister.

He also became very active in the civil rights movement. This was a group of people who wanted all people treated fairly.

Martin was chosen to lead the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955.

In 1963 he King gave his famous "I have a Dream" speech. He gave the speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. in front of 200,000 people.

In April of 1968, King was in Memphis, Tennessee to help people. On April 4, 1968 he was killed by an assassin who shot him while he waved to a crowd.

In 1986 King's birthday was established as a holiday known as "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day."
