James Madison was born on March 16, 1751 in Port Conway, Virginia. He died on June 28, 1836 in Orange County, Virginia. |

He was taught to read and write by his mother and grandmother. When he was 11 he was sent to a boarding school. By 12 he was speaking Latin. He went to college at what is now called Princeton University. |

Madison is known as the "father of the constitution." He became president in 1809. He served two terms. He was president during the war of 1812. The British set fire to the White House and capitol during the war. Madison's wife, Dolly Madison, saved her husband's documents and the only portrait of George Washington. He died at age 85. |
