Nelson's father was chief of the Tembu Tribe. Nelson went to a mission school. He went to Fort Hare University. It was the only university where blacks could go. He qualified for law school in 1942. |

Nelson was a civil rights leader. He was arrested many times by an all white government. In 1964 he was put in prison for life for fighting for black civil rights. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in civil rights. |
