St. Louis Park

City Government

City Government's Goal

The City's goal is to deliver services to ensure a safe, welcoming and vital community now and in the future.

Form of Government

St. Louis Park has a City Council and City Manager form of government.

The city council is a group of 7 people. It is made up of the Mayor of the city, and 6 council members. They set the laws and direction for the city.

St. Louis Park voters elect the mayor and six City Council members. They hold their offices for a four-year term.

The city Manager is hired by the city. The manager then hires workers for the city. The city workers carry out city council decisions and provide services.

More About the City Council

The City Council holds regular meetings on the first and third Mondays of each month at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall, on Minnetonka Boulevard.

What Happens at Council Meetings

The City Council meets to make laws and make sure the city is running well.

A meeting may have some or all of these -

  • The Mayor will call the meeting to order
  • Presentations will be made by citizens
  • An agenda for the meeting is approved
  • Public discussions of an issue
  • Laws and possible future laws are discussed
  • The Council may receive a report from a government group
  • The Council members or City staff may talk about an issue to be considered at a future meeting or simply share information
  • The Mayor closes the meeting

Speaking At a Council Meeting

Citizens are welcome to speak before the City Council.

Watching Council Meetings

Citizens may attend any City Council meeting.  St. Louis Park cable subscribers also may watch meetings at home on Channel 17.
