Student Health Services

Healthy learners are our goal! Health services are provided in each school. The health office is staffed by a health aide and a licensed school nurse who oversees several buildings.

School health services
  • Health record maintenance (including immunizations)
  • Medication administration and management
  • Care for children who become ill or are injured at school
  • Care for children who are in need of ongoing health procedures
  • Communicating with parents regarding health concerns (immediate or ongoing) for their children
  • Vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings are conducted at each school on a scheduled basis or upon request if a concern is noted
  • Monitoring and communicating about communicable diseases
  • Health education to individual students and classrooms
Illness
Guidelines for determining if your child is well enough to attend school are as follows:
  • Keep your child home if they have vomited or had diarrhea. The student should remain at home until 24 hours after the last episode.
  • Keep your child home if he/she has a temperature of 100.0 degrees or higher. The student should remain at home until 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal.
  • Keep you child home if they have had a strep throat culture until you know the results. If your child has strep throat, he/she may return to school when he/she has been on an antibiotic for 24 hours.
Medications
The administration of medication in school will only be done with written permission by a physician for prescription medication, written permission of a parent/guardian for over the counter medication. The medication must be in the original container. This includes medication necessary for a temporary condition as well as for ongoing medical diagnosis. Medication that is not FDA approved will not be administered in school.

Physical Education
If you child has a health problem that limits participation in physical education class, you must send a note. They may be excused for no more than three days upon parent request. A doctor's note is required for more than three days of excused absence from physical education class.
