Kindergarten FAQ


Having a child who is ready to start Kindergarten is exciting. It is also a time when parents have many questions about the process of getting their child officially enrolled and on the way to a successful school career. The information below is designed to answer many of those questions. Frequently asked questions about Kindergarten

Basic Info

What are the start and end times?
• The Kindergarten school day is from 8:50 - 11:20 for AM Kindergarten or 12:40 - 3:10 for PM Kindergarten.

When do we find out who our teacher is?
• You will receive a letter the week preceding school with your teacher's name and your early conference time.

What are the typical Kindergarten class sizes?
• Current class size is 18-22 students in Kindergarten.

Is there a breakfast and lunch program for Kindergarten students?
• Yes, we serve breakfast for AM Kindergarteners for a fee. Families should sign-up for the breakfast program with food services.
• Lunch is served only to grades 1-3 unless a student is enrolled in the Kid's Place program (see Childcare).



Transportation

What determines if a child has AM or PM Kindergarten?
• Generally children south of Highway 7 are AM and those north of Highway 7 are PM.
• Walkers are scheduled to balance.
• We can change AM and PM students, but parents have to provide their own transportation if they switch out of their regular zone.

Can my child ride the bus?
• Currently students in grades K-3 who live at least .6 miles away from school are bussed.
• An adult must meet the child at the bus stop daily.

What bus will my child ride?
• Families whose children are enrolled before August will receive their child's bus stop and route number in the mail prior to the start of school.

Childcare

Do you have before and after school day care?
• Yes, we have both. You may contact community education about our Kid's Place program at (952) 928-6764. • This program fills up quickly, please enroll early. Click here to view more info on childcare options.


MN and SLP Screening

Does my child need early childhood screening?
• Yes, this is a Minnesota State sponsored screening that is required by law for all children before they enter Kindergarten.
• This screening is not the same as a physical done by the doctor.
• This screening is not the same as the Kindergarten assessment doen by the school district.
• Parents are encouraged to bring their children for a screening by age four.
• Call (952) 928-6726 for a screening appointment for your preschooler.


Immunizations

Will my child need immunizations before they start school?
• All incoming Kindergarten students must complete the required immunizations before starting school.
• Free medical care is available at Central Clinic located in our Central Community Center. The Clinic is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays 1-4:30 p.m.
• Call (952) 993-1100 to schedule an appointment or contact your family doctor to get the immunization verification documents.


Enrollment

How do I enroll my child?
• In mid-March, any child in the Peter Hobart attendance area will receive a mailing containing all registration information and forms necessary for enrollment.
• Call the Peter Hobart office with questions regarding enrollment at (952) 928-6600.

Are there any meetings held to provide me with more information about Peter Hobart Kindergarten?
• Plan to attend the Kindergarten Information Night on Tuesday, January 29 , 2008 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.. On this night, you can tour Peter Hobart to learn about the programs at the school and have a chance to meet with teachers and other staff.
• Kindergarten Roundup/Registration is held on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Please bring your child's birth certificate and up to date immunizations & early childhood screening information.

What is Kindergarten Roundup/Registration?
• This evening is an opportunity for parents and incoming Kindergarteners to get an overview of the Kindergarten program at Peter Hobart.
• Families will turn in their registration forms and other documents to complete the enrollment process.
• During the presentation, incoming students will experience a mini Kindergarten day with one of the Kindergarten teachers.
• Following the presentation, parents will pick up their child in the classroom and may visit with the teachers and view the other Kindergarten classrooms.


Program Info

WIll there be volunteer opportunities in my child's classroom?
• Yes, at Peter Hobart, school and classroom volunteers are welcomed and encouraged.

Will my child participate in music and physical education with a specialist?
• Kindergarten students attend music class twice a week with the Music Specialist.
• Physical Education is offered beginning in first grade. Students in grades 1-3 have Physical Education with the Phy. Ed. specialist every day.

Will my child have access to media & technology?
• Every classroom at Peter Hobart is equipped with an up to date iMac computer.
• In addition, Kindergarten students will go to the computer lab on a regular basis in our state of the art media center.
• Kindergarten students will also attend Library Media class once a week with the Media Specialist to check out books and learn about media resources.
