Seven Wonders of the ANcient WOrld

More than 2000 years ago, about 150 B.C., a Greek poet name Antipater of Sidon wrote a short poem mentioning seven places he had visited throughout the easter Mediterranean world. These places served as a "travel guide" for the ancient Athenians.

I have gazed on the walls of impregnable Babylon, along which chariots may race, and on the the Zeus by the banks of the Alphaeus. I have seen the Hanging Gardens and the Colossus of Helios, the great man-made mountains of the lofty pyramids, and the gigantic tomb of Mausolus. But when I saw the sacred House of Artemis that towers to the clouds, the others were placed in the shade, for the sun himself has never looked upon its equal outside of Olympus. -Antipater of Sidon

Though only one of these magnificent architechtural feats stands today they have inspired many other lists of Seven Wonders, including those from the natural world, and modern world. Currently there is a global campaign called the New 7 Wonders of the World. This time the wonders will be chosen by not just one person, but instead millions of people from all over the world. The New 7 Wonders will be officially announced, 7-7-07.
