Overall Understandings:
Outcomes- or standards-based reporting assumes different questions than percentage-based reporting.
For outcomes-based reporting, the student completes the entire outcome, and the teacher evaluates the quality of the best work from each student. Is the work at the level expected for success at this grade level? Is it better or worse than the expected? For percentage-based reporting, the student completes a percentage of the required work, and the teacher decides which percentage equates to which grade. Is 70% of the expected work or quality there? Is 100% evident?
In the first case, teachers take into account all of the best evidence the student provides and determines the quality of it compared to pre-determined criteria. In the second case, teachers determine how much of the work is completed and what grade that represents.
Some outcomes preclude “E” (Knowing letters has a limit of Succeeding.)
Score against the end-of-year expectations/outcomes throughout the whole year.
Teacher observation and discussion with students should always be included in determining report card mark.
We have to be honest and frank about a student’s standing in relation to the outcome.
