Steps To Relicensure
During the 5-year period prior to expiration of license:
  • Participate in relicensure experiences for a total of 125 clock hours.
  • Secure official verification document for each experience (transcripts, letter, certificate or other forms).
  • Follow the procedures outlined in the Standard/Vocational Local Committee on Continuing Education GUIDELINES attached to this document. See RESPONSIBILITIES OF LICENSEE and CLOCK HOUR CATEGORIES sections.
  • Please note there are four additional requirements that must be met by all relicensing teachers. They are listed on the bottom of the KEY for Determining Clock Hour Credits (see GUIDELINES, Appendix section).
  • Submit one copy of the Standard Clock Hour Approval Form (see GUIDELINES, Appendix section), along with the original verification forms for all experiences including the additional requirements. Submissions can be grouped by category. Send to Mary Shultz in Human Resources.
  • The Continuing Education Committee meets three times each year on the last Tuesday in September, and the second Tuesday in February and May. Submissions should be received in Human Resources at least two days prior to the committee meeting.
  • The Minnesota Educator Licensing system now offers online licensure renewal. To view the MELS-Online Renewal System go to education.state.mn.us, under Teacher Support choose Educator Licensing and Renewal Information. If you choose to complete a paper application, there is a section labeled Licensure Forms. Please note: since clock hours are now submitted electronically by Human Resources, the committee signature is no longer needed on the application.
  • The Continuing Education Committee will process your materials and return them to you approximately one week after the regularly scheduled meetings. You will receive two copies of your license from the Department of Education, send one copy to Sue Thomas in Human Resources for your permanent file.
  • If you have questions regarding your Minnesota teaching license, contact the Department of Education at 651-582-8691. Or you may visit their website at education.state.mn.us.
