Creating Schools Where Each Student Thrives

Since stepping into my role as your superintendent, I have had the privilege of learning from each of you. I want to thank you for sharing the strengths you see in our district, as well as the opportunities we have to improve. Your insights have been invaluable, and they have led me to important reflections and action steps that I’d like to share with you.

This year, I am leading with the theme of "Been, Being and Becoming". When I reflect on where we have been, I want to acknowledge that there were times in our past that caused harm to members of our community. As we approach Oct. 7, I’m reminded of the deeply traumatic events that have impacted many of our Jewish and Muslim families. 

We must create a sense of belonging for all students—regardless of their background, beliefs, or identity. In times of tension and uncertainty, it is more crucial than ever to come together, heal, and elevate our expectations for one another.

As a district, we will not  tolerate any actions or behaviors that cause harm, exclusion, or intimidation within our school community. Every student has the right to feel safe, respected, and valued when they step into our schools. Acts of discrimination, harassment, or bullying—whether in the classroom, hallways, or online—do not have a place in St. Louis Park Public Schools. Our priority is the well-being and humanity of each and every student.

As adults, it is not for us to decide what is or isn’t harmful to our students. Our responsibility is to listen to students when they share their experiences of harm, exclusion, or discomfort. We must respect their voices, take their concerns seriously, and respond with empathy and action. 

Each adult in our schools plays a critical role in creating a safe and positive environment. We hold staff to the highest standards of active supervision and accountability. This means being fully present, attentive, and responsive to the needs of our students at all times—whether in the classroom, during transitions, or in common areas. 

As the leader of this district, it is my charge to ensure the safety and well-being of every student. This is a responsibility I take to heart, and I am committed to making our schools a place where each student can thrive—emotionally, socially, and academically. We will continue to implement and strengthen policies that protect our students, foster inclusivity, and promote community healing.
