Superintendent's Office

Welcome from Superintendent Osei, Ed. D.

Astein Osei

St. Louis Park Public Schools has had a long tradition of academic excellence and innovation, welcoming learning environments, and high levels of access to co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. I am committed to continuing and building upon the strong traditions in these areas in order to provide our students a safe and nurturing environment that energizes and enhances the spirit.

It is exciting to contribute to St. Louis Park Public Schools’ mission objective to ensure all students will achieve the knowledge, skills, passion and attitudes to meet or exceed rigorous academic standards, without demographically predictable results, in order to succeed in their future. Our mission and core values are what drew me to the district, as I am a firm believer in students contributing to community, engaging in lifelong learning, and having access to learning experiences that acknowledge their cultural and racial identity.

As your Superintendent, I am proud to be part of a mission driven district where we challenge all learners to meet high standards and offer multiple pathways to excellence. I am looking forward to a positive and productive school year for all of our learners in St. Louis Park Public Schools!

Superintendent's Bio

Astein Osei, Ed. D., began his career in education as a Health and Physical Education Teacher at Cretin-Derham Hall (CDH) high school in St. Paul. Following his time at CDH, Astein took an administrative position in the Osseo Area School district. During his tenure in the Osseo Area School district, Astein served in several different leadership roles (Assistant Principal (Park Center Senior High and Maple Grove Senior High), Division of Leadership, Teaching and Learning Principal on Special Assignment, Director of Educational Equity and Assistant Superintendent). Astein also spent time in the St. Paul Public School district as the Principal of Johnson Aerospace and Engineering High School.

Having the opportunity to serve in multiple site and district level leadership positions helped him to develop a system level perspective and better understand the strategic nature in which school districts must operate for successful implementation of strategic plan strategies. Astein is firm believer in the power of public education and understands that in order to create an anti-racist democracy we must have effective public schools that produce citizens who are change agents. Astein joined St. Louis Park Public Schools as Superintendent July 1, 2017.

In 2017, he led the District in the successful passage of a $100.9 million bond referendum and renewal of the operating levy. During the 2018-19 school year, he helped to facilitate a successful start-end time change process which resulted in the School Board approving the change in start-end times for the 2020-21 school year. He focuses his daily work on the achievement of the District’s mission and strategic plan.

Astein provides leadership throughout the St. Louis Park community as a member of the Children First Executive Committee, St. Louis Park Noon Rotary, St. Louis Park Human Rights Commission, St. Louis Park Crime Prevention Board, Perspectives Board of Directors, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Community Advisory Board and Keep Every Youth Safe (KEYS) Initiative.
