Thanks to a generous $9,000 grant from the Park Public Schools and Community Foundation in St. Louis Park, along with the leadership of Park Spanish Immersion garden co-chairs Kylie and Becky, a community garden will allow students to create joy in an outdoor space they get to maintain!
The garden will serve as a living classroom where students can immerse themselves in hands-on learning and build a meaningful connection with nature. The garden will also support skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and appreciation of the environment.
"It’s not just about gardening— we are encouraging students to appreciate where their food comes from,” said the garden co-leads Kylie and Becky, Park Spanish Immersion Elementary teachers. The plan is for students to plant fruits, vegetables, pollinator plants, and native species in the garden.
This initiative is grounded in authentic community engagement, one of St. Louis Park Public Schools core values. It is rooted in engaging and supporting our employees, families, and communities and will enhance the healthy development of each learner. We’re creating an environment where students can thrive, both in and outside the classroom.
The garden is designed to be a hub for community engagement – welcoming families, staff, and local residents to get involved. The garden co-leads are open to allowing groups to ‘adopt the garden’ over the summer and have volunteer opportunities during the school year. This will allow the entire community to play a part in its growth.
"This garden will bring students, families, and community members together in such a meaningful way. The opportunities for growth, learning, and connection are truly endless!"
We are very excited to see how the garden takes off at PSI! Thank you again to the Park Public Schools and Community Foundation for supporting this awesome initiative. St. Louis Park Home Depot volunteers will also join on the build day to get the project off the ground!
Parents, care givers, students, staff and community members looking to be involved in the garden are invited to the Community Garden Build Day on Saturday, September 28 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Breakfast and snacks will be provided! St. Louis Park Home Depot volunteers will also join on the build day to get the project off the ground.
