SLP Families,
Thank you for your flexibility during a rapidly changing and often unpredictable time. Our teachers and staff amaze me as they continue to demonstrate our core values of collective responsibility and authentic community engagement. Monday and Tuesday served as an important opportunity for our teachers and staff who have been carefully balancing student safety on top of academics. I am grateful for their commitment to our school community.
The decision to close school temporarily was not simple or easy, and it was made to address the concerns of safety within our community. Our district does not operate a fully online school, and creating a meaningful e-learning pathway requires thoughtful preparation. After reviewing when this should occur, it was logical to put it at the quarter break. This closure created space for our teachers and staff to design structures and supports so students can continue learning in a way that feels safe and connected.
I know there have been many questions, and I want to remind you that we are thoughtful about what information is shared so we do not cause unintentional harm. Here is the information I will provide:
- Why won’t the district share the number or percentage of students participating in e-learning? We are not sharing the number of students participating online because that information could be used in ways that may cause harm to vulnerable students and families. Our responsibility is to protect students and families first.
- Why did the district cancel school for two days and decide to provide e-learning? St. Louis Park Public Schools heard a request to provide an online learning option for students who were concerned with safety. The decision to offer e-learning reflects our commitment to serving the needs of the entire school community and ensuring each student has continued access to learning.
- How will the district make up lost instructional time? Grades E-11 continue to be above the minimum requirement of 165 instructional days and the respective required hours. Seniors will be below the required hours by approximately 7 hours. An e-learning day will be added for seniors to make up this lost time.
Thank you again for your trust and flexibility. Our shared goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and feel supported.
With gratitude,
Dr. Carlondrea Hines
Superintendent
