St. Louis Park High School Student Joins Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Youth Advisory Council

Otoha Masaki, a junior at St. Louis Park High School, recently joined U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Youth Advisory Council. Through this experience, she will engage in civic action, develop leadership skills, and gain understanding of the legislative process – all while shaping policies that affect young people across Minnesota.

"I have been informed about the various ways that students are affected due to their identities,” she shared. “It is important to do whatever I can to help, be informed, and provide input into helping the community. My passion for anti-racist work and advocating for minorities were the main reasons for wanting to join the Youth Advisory Council.”

Otoha is especially looking forward to addressing issues of racial discrimination and immigration and their impacts on schools. She is an active student that is involved with SOAR (Students Organized for Anti-Racism) and the Youth Data Analyst internship (YDA) program. Her educational and lived experience has prepared her for this opportunity of advocacy where she plans to elevate student voices and advocate for underrepresented communities.

Though her immediate focus is on advocacy and policy work, Otoha’s long-term goal is to pursue a career in neuroscience. She plans to attend college as a science major with aspirations of entering the medical or research field in neurology. Even within STEM, she aims to continue advocating for diversity and inclusivity.

"Even with my interest in STEM, I am still interested in being part of anti-racist work and promoting inclusivity within the STEM field," she said.

The student credits Dr. Lafayette, a mentor and instructor from the YDA internship, for supporting her journey. Dr. Lafayette provided a recommendation letter and has continued to offer guidance beyond the internship by connecting students to opportunities like the Youth Advisory Council.

"She is someone I look up to, and I am grateful for the support she has given."

With a strong commitment to making Minnesota a more equitable place, Otoha is eager to contribute her perspective and help shape the future through their role on the Youth Advisory Council.
