    What is Dollars for Scholars?

St. Louis Park Dollars for Scholars, affiliated with Scholarship America, is a volunteer, community based organization committed to raising scholarships funds for Park High School seniors. It is a locally operated and supported, non-profit, tax-exempt scholarship foundation and has been in existence since 1995. SLP DFS is managed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors committed to increasing the amount of scholarship money available while keeping the cost to a minimum. Our yearly operating cost is less than $1000 – about 1.5% of the scholarships awarded. Our purpose is to encourage academic achievement and to expand access to educational opportunities by providing scholarship assistance. New board members are welcome. Please contact Barb Nelson, SLPHS Counselor and Scholarship Coordinator at 952-928-6131 or nelson.barb@slpschools.org for more information.

An excerpt from a thank you note:

“Thank you so much for the scholarship…St. Louis Park has always been an encouraging atmosphere and led me to reach farther than I ever imagined…. I lived a childhood in a place surrounded by prejudice and when my mother an I moved to St. Louis Park, being Native American was not longer a quality that held me back from reaching my full potential. I am very happy that I can finally thank this community for making me feel welcome and providing a nurturing place for both my mother and I to grow. I hope to honor this community through the achievements that await me in college. As you know, I am going to the University of Minnesota located in Morris. Currently, I am striving for a major in biology, completion of an Area of Emphasis in Native American studies and a minor in geology…I wish to give eternal thanks to the schools and community …for preparing me for the next step in my life. Mii gwitch (Thank you)”
