Professional interests:
I found my passion for Athletic Training as many others have, being the injured athlete as a
pitcher in college. As the athletic trainer at St. Louis Park High School, it is extremely rewarding
to provide medical care to the athletes and to engage and educate the coaches, parents, and
staff within the local sports community. My love for sports medicine, rehabilitation, and caring
for the athlete stems from my experience as one. I pride myself on providing the best care and
education possible for any patient or athlete.
Personal interests:
Skiing, Fly Fishing, Camping, Upland Hunting and Bird dogs.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter Averie and adventuring
outdoors. You’ll find us camping, hiking, biking, fly fishing, hunting or some other fun new outdoor activity!

What is athletic training?
Athletic trainers are multiskilled health care professionals who specialize in evaluating,
diagnosing and caring for injuries, illnesses and other medical conditions that affect athletes.
They’re highly educated in emergency care for a range of conditions, including heat illness,
traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), spinal cord injuries and cardiac arrest.

Athletic training services at St. Louis Park High School
The TRIA Athletic Trainer (AT) is responsible for on-site medical care for student-athletes.
They’ll be at the school during most after-school sports practices and on-site during home
games (when contracted by the school). Having the support of an Athletic Trainer (AT) at school
activities promotes safety and reduces the risk of sports injuries.
The Athletic Trainer (AT) duties include:
Emergency preparedness and care
Evaluating and diagnosing
Managing injuries and medical conditions
Determining return-to-play status or restrictions
We’re here to help with orthopedic injuries, concussions and medical emergencies that happen
during practices or games. To provide the best-possible care, the Athletic Trainer (AT) will work
with your child’s full medical team.
If your child needs additional care, the Athletic Trainer (AT) will refer you to the appropriate
provider. Depending on the athlete’s needs, we may refer you to TRIA for orthopedics, sports
medicine, physical therapy or other specialty care.
Athlete responsibilities
In order to provide the best-possible care, the student-athlete must:
Have a pre-participation physical exam
Complete and return all required medical forms
Report all injuries and illnesses to Athletic Trainer in a timely manner
Follow treatment recommendations and referral guideline
If a student-athlete sees a doctor or is treated by an outside medical provider for an injury or
illness, they must give the school’s Athletic Trainer (AT) a written doctor’s note before they
can return to practice or games. This follows the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL)
rules (PDF), protects the student and supports continuity of care.
Pre-participation physical exams
Student-athletes must have a pre-participation physical exam (PPE) before starting the sport
season. During an exam, your medical provider will check for conditions that could increase the
student’s risk of a sports injury.
Per the MSHSL, the PPE form must be completed and returned to the school prior to physical
activity. This form is valid for three years.
Download the MSHSL PPE form (PDF)
TRIA offers no-cost high school pre-participation physicals every summer before the start of the
fall sports season. Call 952-993-9451 or email sportsmedicine@tria.com for more information.

My name is Josh Brodersen, and I'm the Athletic Trainer at St. Louis Park High School. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and the Athletic Training program at St. Louis Park High School. SLP HS has partnered with TRIA Orthopedics since the Fall of 2017 to provide the best athletic training services and streamlined access to further medical care.
As the primary Licensed (LAT) and Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) I will be working with your son and/or daughter and their teammates. I am at the high school for nearly every competition and have hours every weekday afternoon to provide treatments, and initial evaluations or follow-up care of athletic injuries.
In order to provide quality care, please review the following:
1. It's the athlete’s responsibility to report any injury or illness to the athletic trainer or coach.
2. It is the athlete’s responsibility to report for treatment in the Athletic Training Room (ATR) on time, so they can return to practice in a timely fashion.
3. If your son/daughter needs to see a physician, TRIA has provided two excellent Team Physicians working with SLPHS.
Our Primary Physician is Dr. Gregory Hildebrand (http://tria.com/provider/gregory-hildebrand/)
Dr. Hildebrand provides his services and expertise to all of the athletes at SLP and will be on the sidelines at home varsity football games! Appointments can also be made for athletes to see a physician on a same day/next day basis by calling 952-806-5600.
4. Return to play decisions will be based upon sound medical judgment with the athlete’s best interests in mind.
5. Return to play decisions after a concussion/head injury will follow the TRIA sport concussion protocol, relative to the needs of their sport following international research standards, timelines, and requirements.
TRIA features one of the top Sport Concussion programs in the region. They are one of the only clinics in the Midwest to focus on post-concussion rehabilitation specific to return to sport participation. Their Research driven approach makes them a great resource or option after concussion to make a full and safe return to sport. http://tria.com/programs/sport-concussion/
6. Minnesota State High School League rules state that, if under a physician’s care for an injury/illness/surgery, the athlete will need a signed note from the physician regarding the athlete's participation status in their respective sport. The note must be given to the ATC and the ATC must evaluate the injury before the athlete can resume participation. If the athlete is not seeing a physician, the return to play decision will be made by the ATC.
7. If a coach or athlete disregards a return-to-play decision, the school’s athletic director will be notified.
I look forward to an exciting and healthy season with you and your student athlete! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me (See Contact Page)
Sincerely,
Josh Brodersen, MA, LAT, ATC
