Sam (Schroeder) Hanlon graduated from Maple Lake High School in 2000. During her time at Maple Lake, she was a 9x All-Conference selection in Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball and a Captain for 2 years in each sport. During her sophomore year, Sam set a conference record for home runs in a season; during her senior year, she held the state record for assists in a game (basketball). She was also named to the All-State softball team in 2000- the first softball player at Maple Lake to do so.

Here she earned a degree in elementary education in 2004. After graduating, Sam taught elementary education and was the head volleyball coach at Isle Public Schools where the Huskies went from a 1-21 record to 11-11 in her first year. She was nominated for Conference Head Coach of the Year in 2006. The next year she taught 2nd grade and was the head volleyball coach in the HLWW school district. What does the word “captain” mean to you: I think being a captain means being the face of a program where people knows you, and have a relationship with you, no matter their age. being a captain means standing up and taking responsibility even if no one is watching. It’s what you do on the court to encourage your teammates, but it’s also what you do off the court to let your community know that you have their full support. being a captain is much more than just being a leader, you have to be able to step up in hard situations and make a decision.
What are you looking forward to this season: I’m mostly looking forward to growing the team connection we started building last year. With the lineup being similar, I think we have a big advantage and a big chance at going to state, and i would love for our girls to make that happen. I would also like to get close to the younger girls and feel like the older girls support them 100%.
What is your favorite thing about volleyball: My favorite thing about volleyball is the fact that volleyball is such a versatile sport, and you can be many things. As a middle, I am limited- but, knowing that in a position I can fulfill and highlight other positions makes me happy. At the end of the day, it’s a huge team sport and I love being a part of something that is going to make a difference.
