Spring and Summer 2019 Facilities Update
A number of construction projects are scheduled to take place during the Spring and Summer months of 2019 related to the bond referendum that was passed in November of 2017. District buildings where construction will take place this Spring and Summer include the High School, Middle School, Aquila Elementary School and Cedar Manor/Park Spanish Immersion School.
High School Offices Construction
Construction will begin in early April on the space formerly occupied by the District Office on the northwest side of the High School adjacent to West 33rd Street.
The space will be reconfigured to fit the needs of the High School Administration and will house the Principal and Assistant Principals, the Student Office staff, the Counseling Office staff, the Health Office staff, and the School Resource Officer. The project will also create a new “main entry” adjacent to the current loading dock.
This project will not only allow a more efficient work environment for High School Administration, but it will also free up space within the High School for more classroom and learning space.
Fencing will be put up around the construction zone and there will be no access in the old District Office main door that faces West 33rd Street. The 17 parking stalls adjacent to the old District Office main door will also be unavailable to the public starting March 18. The construction project has an anticipated completion date of August 30, 2019.
Students, staff, and families will still be able to enter the parking lot at the intersection of West 33rd Street and Florida Avenue to access student and staff parking, as well as the drop-off and pick-up area outside the Student Office.
High School Athletic Facilities Construction
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-March at St. Louis Park High School as the school’s locker rooms will be completely renovated. When completed, the new locker rooms will feature new lockers, flooring, lighting, toilets, sinks, showers, and branding. There will also be new and improved storage areas, team rooms, and coaches offices, as well as a new common athletic training room.
Beginning Monday, March 11, there will be no access to the High School locker rooms, training room and pool due to construction. There will also be no access in or out of Door #11, which faces out toward Dakota Avenue. Several parking spaces adjacent to Door #11 will also be unavailable during the project, which has an expected completion date of August 5, 2019.
Students and families will still be able to drive through the area adjacent to Door #11 to get to the Activity entrance for drop-off and pick-up. High School spring athletes are encouraged to use their assigned High School hall locker to store equipment and other athletic gear. If additional space is needed, athletes will be able to use the Athletic Office to store equipment during the school day.
The large bathrooms between the Athletic Office and the Fieldhouse, which are usually locked, will be opened after school for athletes to use to change clothes if necessary. The certified athletic trainers office will be temporarily moved into the main gymnasium until construction is complete.
The synchronized swimming team will use the pools at the Middle School and Central Community Center while the High School pool is unavailable for use.
The expansion of the High School weight room/fitness center project is currently out for bid. While construction for this project is expected to start in May, it will not impact students, activities, or the school day in any way.
The High School tennis courts will also be renovated during the spring and summer months. The boys’ high school tennis teams will practice and host matches at alternate city courts this spring season.
Cedar Manor/PSI Project Progressing and on Schedule
Construction projects at Cedar Manor School are progressing as expected and are on schedule. Park Spanish Immersion School will move to the renovated space in mid to late August prior to the 2019-20 school year.
Demolition work is 100 percent complete at the site, while studding and sheetrock work is approximately 60 percent complete. The foundation work is also complete on the new entryway that is being constructed on the east side of the building adjacent to the lower parking lot.
Along with the renovations inside the building, work will continue through the summer months on the new bus loop and outdoor playgrounds.
Construction on South Side of Middle School to Begin in May
Construction will begin on the Middle School Media Center renovation and classroom addition on the far south side of the building in early May. The part of the project being completed this spring involves building the outer shell of the addition. No demolition or interior renovations will take place until June and so there will be limited impact to students and the school day this spring.
The project runs through the summer and fall of 2019 and is expected to be completed in January of 2020. During the first four months (September through December) of the 2019-20 school year, the south end of the building will be closed off from students and staff and the Media Center will be moved to a temporary location within the building.
When the project is completed, the Middle School will have a state-of-the-art Media Center and seven new classrooms on the second floor of the south side of the building.
Summer Construction Scheduled at Aquila; Susan Lindgren Playground Construction
Aquila Elementary School will be closed during the summer of 2019 as a number of construction projects begin inside the building. All of the school’s classrooms will be renovated including upgrades to furniture, lighting, carpet, paint and technology. The school’s media center and kitchen will also be renovated during the summer.
These construction projects are expected to be completed by August 15, 2019. With Aquila closed during June, July and part of August, the elementary summer school program will be moved to Peter Hobart Elementary School for 2019.
At Susan Lindgren Elementary School, a new inclusive playground will be constructed during the summer months with an expected completion date of August 15, 2019. There will be no access for the public to the Susan Lindgren playground while the project is taking place.
Also taking place during the summer months of 2019 will be the completion of the parking lot renovations at Lenox Community Center.
