Sophomore Hayden Zheng Wins Two Events and Sets State Record at State Swimming Meet
St. Louis Park High School sophomore Hayden Zheng won two individual state titles and broke a state record on Saturday, March 2 at the Minnesota State Boys Swimming and Diving Meet, which was held at the University of Minnesota's Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Zheng won the 100-yard breaststroke event for the second year in a row, and did it this time in record fashion with a blazing time of 53.86 seconds. Zheng not only broke the state meet record previously held by Minnetonka's Corey Lau (54.90), but he also broke the all-time Minnesota State High School League record previously held by Minnehaha Academy's Andrew Karpenko (54.41).
Zheng also took first place in the 200-yard individual medley event, a race which requires the swimmer to complete 50 yards in the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Zheng's winning time of 1:48.25 was more than two and a half seconds faster than his closest competitor.
Zheng also combined with teammates, junior Will Schwietering and seniors Luke Anderson and Max Bechtold to finish in ninth place in the 200-yard medley relay event.
