The St. Louis Park High School Quiz Bowl team competed at the National High School Championship Tournament in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 24-26. This year, St. Louis Park High School qualified three teams for the national field, where 1,602 students competed on 330 teams from 40 different states.
The High School’s top team, led by seniors Daniel Hunegs, Jack Ostrovsky, Will Staib and Quinn Whihtlow went 6-1 on day one of the tournament to qualify for the Sunday playoff bracket. The team finished 7-5 overall with wins against teams from Pennsylvania, New York, California, Minnesota and two teams from Texas.
On an individual basis, four students from St. Louis Park finished in the top 300 scorers, putting them in the top 20% of all participants. Staib (130th overall scorer), Whitlow (200th overall scorer) and Neil Walsh (235th overall scorer) all finished in the top 15%, with Staib finishing in the top 10%. Freshman Truman Fillbrandt finished in the top 20% and was the 20th highest scoring freshman at the tournament.
In addition to the strong showing at the national tournament, the team won the 2019 Medium and Small Schools Tournament, claimed the top spot in the Metro West Conference and placed 3rd at the State Tournament.
