Boys Swimming Team Places Ninth at State Meet; Zheng is State Champion in Two Events
The St. Louis Park High School boys swimming team placed ninth at the Class AA State Meet on Saturday, Feb. 29 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. Junior Hayden Zheng won a pair of state championships, while the team had two relay teams earn top-10 finishes.
Zheng won the state title in the 100-yard breaststroke for the third consecutive season with an All-American qualifying time of 54.52 seconds. The junior also defended his 2019 state title in the 200-yard individual medley with an All-American qualifying time of 1:48.04.
The school’s 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of Zheng, senior Will Schwietering, junior Zach Affeldt and sophomore Danny Lainsbury took fifth place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.11.
Lainsbury, Schwietering, Zheng and junior Ben St. Clair combined to take seventh place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.09.
The team finished with a total of 92 points, placing them inside the top 10 with large schools such as Edina, Minnetonka, Wayzata, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove and Mounds View.
During the State Meet, head coach Amanda Forsberg was named the Section 6AA Coach of the Year, while Zheng was named the Section 6AA Boys Swimmer of the Year.
